For many of you who doesn’t know the meaning behind the name, baoli means stepwell. So it is basically a well, where steps take you down to the water. There are multiple baolis in Delhi as well as outside Delhi in India. Ugrasen ki Baoli being the oldest monument of Central Delhi and also the best preserved baoli’s of Delhi. It is located near the most popular location of Delhi, Connaught Place. The entry for the place is free, one can visit the place any day between 7am to 6pm.
“Ugrasen ki Baoli” also commonly referred to as “Agrasen ki Baoli”, is a popular heritage site of Delhi, India. The site is popular among the masses and also the bollywood. Bollywood seems to have some affinity for the site as we see the place being used for movie shoots time to time. A couple of famous movies shot at Ugrasen ki Baoli are Salman Khan’s Sultan and Amir Khan’s PK. It all gave the place a new life and made it popular amongst masses once again.
It is said that the place was built by Maharaja Agrasen, which indicates the monument might be from the times of Mahabharata. But the archeological survey’s findings state that the architectural style being similar to of the times of Late Tughlaq or Lodhi. It is also said that the original baoli was rebuilt by the Agarwal Community, descendants of Maharaja Agrasen, so it can be of the times of Late Tughlaq.
Just to add, like many other ancient monuments of Delhi, this one also has story of haunts attached to it. It is said that the monument had black water, which supposedly hypnotised people and drew them to commit suicide. People have claimed to hear noises and seeing shadows at the baoli, but no one knows the truth. However, the water has almost disappeared from the baoli over time and once can see many bats and pigeons at the baoli.
